Fool´s Gold (El Oro de los Tontos, 2011) is a 30-minute documentary produced by Costa Rican local activists and University professors, depicting an outrageous string of legal and political irregularities that almost allowed a Canadian Mining Company to destroy a rain forest system in Northern Costa Rica (the so-called "Crucitas Gold Mine"). In a last-minute decision, an Administrative Court revoked the mining permits, and instructed an investigation of Former President, and Nobel-Prize winner, Oscar Arias, who personally endorsed the project from its inception. This video also gained notoriety as two interviewed professors from the Universidad de Costa Rica were sued by the Company for a million dollars each! The International Party Posse Rides into Costa Rica for the annual Envision Festival event. This time... we wanted to feature more of our members' personalities and contributions to making our group come alive and thrive in the jungles.
Filmed early 2014, I tried to find gold with a GPX 5000. Unfortunately everywhere I tried to search had one thing in common, water! In the end I had to give up as the risk to the detector was just too great. I found one small nugget on the beach as well as having good results panning at low tide. I will return in 2015 armed with a SDC 2300, a detector that should be a killer in the jungles of Central America.

Costa Rica has a reputation as a peaceful oasis in Central America, a region that is often ravaged by war. It is also proud of its rain forests and animal life. But the lure of gold is putting the country's environmental policies to the test. 21st century - Show 48-Costa Rica Script (pdf): http://www.un.org/webcast/pdfs/21century48.pdf

The Canadian mining company Infinito Gold is taking Costa Rica to international arbitration. Following the widespread campaign waged by environmentalist activists, Costa Rican courts ordered the cancellation of the concession that was granted earlier to the Canadian company to operate an open-pit gold mine. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/web/telesur/#!en/video/costa-rica-debera-enfrentar-arbitraje-contra-minera-canadiense-en
Start-up of commercial gold production in our first gold mine only few days away.
The Chassoul Mine at the time of shutdown had just reached a production rate of 5000 ounces per year on an annualized basis. Expansion to 10,000 ounces per year is projected with the addition of $1 million in working capital and activation of additional machinery already in place. Funding of US$6 million is solicited from investors interested in participating in the revenue stream derived from the production of gold at the Chassoul mine. The objective is to remove Ascot from Administration and recommence production. Payback of capital to those participating can be accomplished within a 24-36 month time frame from 70% of income from production, reducing to 50% after capital recovery. Continued payments to the participants will continue for the life-of-mine, estimated at over 12 years. Cos...
Oceans cover 70 percent of the earth's surface, but only a fraction of the undersea world has been explored. On this episode of TechKnow, Phil Torres joins a team of scientists on a special expedition to explore and uncover the mysteries at the bottom of the ocean floor. "What we are doing is similar to astronauts and planetary scientists just trying to study life on another planet," says Beth Orcutt, a senior research scientist. The journey begins in Costa Rica aboard the R/V Atlantis, a research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. From there, Phil gets the chance to take a dive with Alvin, a deep-water submersible capable of taking explorers down to 6,000 metres (20,000 feet) under the sea. Commissioned in 1964, Alvin has a celebrated history, locating an une...
